How People Actually Learn: The LSX Framework

At TorranceLearning, we design learning around how people actually learn — what captures attention, helps new skills stick, supports on-the-job application, and removes barriers. Our Learning Science & Experience Framework, or LSX, is the instructional backbone behind everything we design and build.

LSX is TorranceLearning’s framework for designing learning that genuinely works. It blends the rigor of learning science with the craft of exceptional learner experience design — because knowing what works isn’t enough if the experience itself doesn’t engage, respect, and serve real people in real situations.

The framework is organized around ten design commitments, grouped into four areas of focus. Together they guide every decision we make: from strategy and content to delivery, assessment, and sustainment.

A course is not a learning experience. A training event is not behavior change. And checking a compliance box is not the same as building capability.

Designing for Business and Behavior

Learning is a catalyst for competitive advantage.
Workforce skills are a key strategic component of organizational success. We help clients identify exactly what their people need to do differently to reach their business goals — and design from that point forward, not backward from a content outline.

Learning is a journey, not an event.
People don’t change behaviors after one training session. We design experiences that prepare learners beforehand, engage them deeply during learning, and reinforce new behaviors afterward. The event is part of the journey, not the whole thing.

The experience matters.
The quality of a learning experience affects how well people learn. A confusing interface, an unclear objective, a tone that talks down to the learner — these aren’t cosmetic problems. They’re learning problems. We design experiences that are welcoming, clear, and easy to use.

Designing for Human Connection

Story, emotion, and connection enhance learning.
Stories make learning memorable. Emotional connection makes it personal. We craft content that mirrors real-life situations and helps learners see themselves in the material — because people learn better when they can relate to what they’re learning.

Social connection deepens learning.
Learning is stronger when people work through ideas together. We build purposeful opportunities for discussion, collaboration, and reflection — whether that’s in a live session, an online cohort, or a structured practice activity that invites peer input.

Designing for Real People

Accessibility is about access, not just compliance.
Good design ensures everyone can fully engage — not just technically access — a learning experience. We design for meaningful participation, not checkbox compliance.

Different perspectives make learning stronger.
Real-world complexity is best reflected when multiple viewpoints are present. We intentionally bring varied experiences and backgrounds into the design process, so learners encounter fresh ideas and approaches that reflect the world they actually work in.

Every learner deserves the opportunity to grow and succeed.
Great learning happens when people feel supported, respected, and equipped. We champion learning environments that meet each learner where they are and give them what they need to move forward.

Designing for What Happens Next

Measuring impact strengthens learning.
Knowing how learning makes a difference keeps us focused on what matters. We plan for measurement from the start — tracking both numbers and narratives — so our solutions stay connected to real outcomes.

Lasting behavior change requires a sustainment ecosystem.
The learning event ends. The behavior change shouldn’t. We design the systems, supports, and reinforcement pathways that help learners apply and sustain new skills once they’re back on the job.

LSX in Practice

LSX isn’t a document that lives in a drawer. It’s woven into how TorranceLearning works at every stage

  • In the Learning Project Ignition, where we build shared understanding of goals, learners, and what success looks like

  • In learning design and strategy, where design decisions are evaluated against LSX commitments

  • In Design Jams, where we work through complex design challenges with clients

  • In the instructions for all our AI tools, ensuring that AI-assisted work reflects the same instructional standards as everything else we build

  • In professional development for our team, so that every person at TorranceLearning understands not just what we build, but why we build it the way we do

Ready to build learning that actually works?

Whether you’re starting a new project or rethinking an existing program, the LSX framework shapes how we approach every engagement.
