Go Big or Go Small: Just Get Started with xAPI

Our “thing” around here at TorranceLearning centers around getting people ready with the skills and confidence they need to do amazing things. We’ve done that for nearly 15 years and it’s what gets us out of bed in the morning (that and the lure of Zingerman’s coffee at the office). While most of the time we’re designing and developing learning programs for our clients’ employees, members or customers, of late we’ve spent considerable time helping learning & development (L&D) teams get excited and ready to implement xAPI.

There’s a point in any new endeavor where you just have to dive in and get started, and we’ve seen two approaches emerge:

  • Go big. As Megan Torrance noted in a recent ATD blog post, “When leadership demands that “we’re going to do this, and we’re going to do this right!” that’s often a clear call for enhanced data to support decision-making.” And xAPI.
  • Go small. The other approach is to work quietly and learn fast. In the same article, Megan says, “It seems like every week I hear about another L&D team taking on a small quiet project, with free or inexpensive tools and a little bit of programming to start measuring more about the learning experience.”
