Megan speaks on “10 Things You Always Wanted to Know About ELearning (but Never Had the Chance to Ask)”

On April 1, TorranceLearning CEO Megan Torrance spoke to the Ann Arbor chapter of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD). Far from typical dinner meeting fare, Megan asked almost as many questions as she answered.  “My goal was to draw out as many people as possible, share ideas, and get the conversation started,” she says. “That’s a lot more interesting than listening to me speak for an hour!”

If you know Megan, you know that when she talks, she can’t help but use pictures. This presentation was no exception. She used a lot of samples, illustrations, and funky graphics to support her talk. Her questions gave the audience a chance to join a discussion about their experiences with elearning, share what they already know, and ask each other questions about how to get around the roadblocks they’ve found. Some of the questions Megan answered include,

o   How does elearning differ from instructor-led training?
o   Is it better to make custom elearning or buy off the shelf?
o   Is elearning more economical, efficient, and environmentally friendly than instructor-led training?
o   Is it as effective as instructor-led training?
o   When is elearning a good choice?
The audience was engaged and interested. A lot of people had not explored elearning much, and were eager to find out more. Some were surprised to find out how affordable it can be. A few shared their own experiences with learning management systems, live web training, and elearning tools that they were familiar with. One person attending the presentation talked about her company’s use of role play in learning. Someone else asked about others’ experiences with mobile learning.

The TorranceLearning team got a lot of positive feedback from people in attendance who wanted to learn more about elearning.  We’ve continued the discussion online at the ASTD Ann Arbor LinkedIn discussion group. We’re hoping to get more thoughts from some of the people who were at the presentation, as well as from those who weren’t able to be there.
