CHELSEA, Michigan --- TorranceLearning, an instructional design and development company located in Chelsea, Michigan, was looking to make a difference ... maybe even to save a life.
In 2009, the company took on an elearning project with the North Central (US) region of Be The Match®, which is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). TorranceLearning developed online training for volunteers who will work at bone marrow donor registration drives.
“This online course is going to be a tremendous asset for our program,” said NMDP North Central Coordinator Barb Rozier. “TorranceLearning has given so much to create elearning that will help volunteers run a successful marrow drive. This will make our training much more efficient, and ultimately, more people will join the marrow registry and more lives will be saved.”
The online course, titled Marrow Drive Volunteer Training, is about 45 minutes in length and enables volunteers to learn about marrow donation. Volunteers also learn about the roles involved in a registration drive, and how to assist people in joining the registry.
TorranceLearning’s relationship with the the Be The Match® registry is also a personal one. The father of Emily Taylor, one of the company’s employees, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in 2005.
“As a company, we wanted to get involved somehow with the Be The Match® registry to help find a match for Emily’s dad, or anyone out there who needs a marrow transplant,” said company president Megan Torrance. “When we realized that we could build elearning to help train the hundreds of volunteers that work at donor drives each year, we jumped at the chance. This course will help the volunteers become competent and confident in their roles, so they can be ready on the day of their drive.”
The Be The Match® registry has over seven million potential donors, but more donors are needed all the time. To learn more about Be the Match®, go to www.bethematch.org.
